What is FMT?
Fecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) also known as Gut Flora Transplants (GFT) or bacteriotherapy is a treatment known to improve the microbiota diversity and density of the microbiome commonly found in the gut.
Research over the last few decades has proven that the intestines are not just an elimination pathway. They contain a rich supply of blood vessels and mucous membranes which host a vast community of functional bacteria that actively exchange substances. The large intestine lubricates and facilitates passage of stools, and can also harbor a nutrient-rich colon environment, which is essential to a proper functioning circulatory system. The goal of FMT is to replace the healthy gut bacteria that have been killed off by either long term antibiotic use or a history of chronic infection that changed the healthy microbiome of the gut in a negative way.
Fecal transplantation is the transfer of stool from a healthy screened donor into the gastrointestinal tract for the purpose of treating recurrent C. difficile colitis, which can cause such severe diarrhea that it can be fatal. Also, a promising new treatment for IBS, Crohn Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. FMT has also been used to successfully treat autism primarily in children and now is getting press for a myriad of other ailments including depression. It has been used around the world for a greater variety of illnesses.
As ‘Icky’ as it may sound to some, is actually quite an ancient therapy. It was documented in China in the 4th Century when physician Ge Hong described fecal solutions to treat food poisoning and severe diarrhea. The remedy was considered a miracle that brought patients back from the dead. Later in the 16th century, herbal healers described using fermented fecal solutions called “yellow soup” for abdominal ailments. Today, it is still customary in many parts of the world for newborns to receive a tiny amount of mother’s stool by mouth as a way of immediately populating the infant’s gut with healthy bacteria and turning on the baby’s immune system.

FMT in the UK
In the UK the Taymount Clinic is one of the clinics leading the way for the this procedure. A typical procedure is a 10 day Gut Flora Transplant (FMT) Programme, with a ‘rest weekend’ between days 5 and 6. Alongside the FMT, advice and care to improve gut health through personalised dietary and lifestyle advice.
Alternatively, if you can’t stomach the cost of a private clinic such as the Taymount, then Dr Dietrich Klinghardt, teaches a self-administered approach for use with children on the Autism Spectrum and adults with Lyme disease, developed by
People are doing their own transplants at home, using little more than stools from a relative (generally the father, a blender and an enema kit
A quick online search offers up how-to guides and success stories, not just for gastrointestinal disorders, but for other conditions, for which evidence of FMT efficacy is even more scant. Some parents of children with severe autism, for example, are swapping notes on FMT on online forums, even though all they have to go on is limited evidence of an altered gut flora in autism, and a study that showed a species of bacteria could reverse some symptoms in mice with an autism-like disorder.
Even in adults, inserting faeces into the gut is not without risk – there is a chance of introducing disease-causing bacteria and parasites, for example. Side effects have been rare so far, but there are reports of faecal transplants causing infection and gastrointestinal bleeding. Do NOT try this at home without suitable medical supervision.
